The 6am temperatures are 20 degrees F on top of Baldy and 30 F at the valley level. Winds are moderate at 10-15 mph blowing out of the northwest. Expected highs today are 23 F at 9000' and in the low 30s in the valleys. Winds should remain relatively calm, blowing from a northerly direction throughout the day.
Approximately 2" of new snow has fallen on Baldy thus far as the counter clockwise-spinning low continues to deposit moisture over the region. We can expect to see this snowfall continue through the day and eventually taper off sometime tomorrow before another high pressure ridge builds over us Thursday. A winter weather advisory remains in effect until noon today and forecasted snowfall is predicted in the 3"-5" range. Although we haven't been talking much about avalanche activity lately, it should be noted that the snowpack still remains sensitive, especially in the shaded northern aspects where it has not been skied. A slide which failed on the deep persistent weak layer near the ground took place a couple days ago on a northerly aspect on Baldy's out of bounds northern flank. In addition to the deep weak layer, there are also multiple buried surface hoar layers and sun crusts which could serve as sliding surfaces and weak, collapsable layers in the pack. The new snowload from the current storm will add weight to these buried layers so travelling on safe routes of ascent and descent will be important for the next couple of days. The Avalanche Center is rating the avie danger as considerable in the north backcountry currently due to last week's snowfall, wind events and these buried unstable layers. But where the pack has been skied (in-bounds of Baldy for instance!) the skiing is excellent and only getting better! See you on the hill. BD
